Dec. 10, 2017In February we organized the Oslo Life Science Conference for the second time.
The topic was Building the life science city, and we showed how we will build Oslo Life Science City with the planned life science building at UiO as a hub for excellent research, education and innovation.
The conference is for all who are interested in research, education, innovation, business and politics in life sciences

Dec. 10, 2017In March the Research Council of Norway appointed five new centres of excellence at UiO.
Among these we find several centres in life sciences.
UiO:Life Science board member Alexander Jensenius is one of the new centre leaders.
Life science researchers at UiO were also well represented when Olav Thon donated 43 million NOK from the Olav Thon Foundation,

Dec. 10, 2017In March we hosted the Life Science Lunch on Innovative life sciences across disciplines – Part 1.
Researchers from five faculties talked about their work at the Life Science Lunches this spring.
The brain with perspectives from biology, physics, informatics, psychology and musicology was on the menu in March.

Dec. 10, 2017In May we could finally announce the first convergence environments – interdisciplinary research groups that aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment.
Man-made pollutants, the peculiar immune system of codfish, embryonic development, personalised cancer therapies, human genetic history and new technologies to handle both disease and pollutants. This will be studied in seven new convergence environments that are funded by UiO:Life Science.

Dec. 10, 2017It was crowded at Frokostkjelleren in May when we hosted an academic after-party on memory at the UiO Festival.
How does our brain make and store memories? What are false memories? Can fake news make us remember things that did not happened? Can we trust testimonies? Can others manipulate our memories? What is possible today and what is science fiction? Neuro psychologist Ylva ?stby, neuro scientist Martha Hvoslef-Eide and police captain and expert on testimonies Asbj?rn Rachlew (PhD) gave short introductions before they debated with moderator Per Olav Alvestad known from the NRK programmes Newton, Schr?dinger’s cat and Don?t do this at home.

Dec. 10, 2017In 2017 we have supported several life science events at UiO financially.
Academic employees and students at UiO can apply UiO:Life Science for funds for partially financing of open events that are in line with the initiative's strategy.
The support from UiO:Life Science is primarily given to open events which aim to promote greater cooperation across faculties. It counts positively that both MedNat and HumSam environments are co-organizers and we encourage scientists within the health area as well as those within environmental life science research to apply,
The application deadlines are 1 June and 1 December annually.
The picture is from Frampeik 2017 – the annual conference for Norwegian medical and dental students in October. Here they had invited three well-known doctors. Watch Kaja Nordengen, who has written the book ?Hjernen er stjernen?, Twitter doctor Wasim Zahid and Medical director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency, Steinar Madsen.

Dec. 10, 2017In 2017 we have given financial support to enhance internationalisation.
Academic employees, post docs and PhD students at UiO can apply for support to strengthen the collaboration with international research environments.
The application deadlines are 1 June and 1 December annually.
One of those who received funding this year was PhD Rakibul Islam, Post-doctoral Fellow, Complement Research Group, Department of Immunology, Oslo University Hospital/University of Oslo. He stayed at the laboratory of one of his collaborators in the US for one week. Here is how he sums up the stay with his own words: "It was a really stimulating research stay over there. I have learned techniques regarding polymer based self-assembled nanomaterial preparation. We brainstormed several ideas and crystalized those ideas to some action plans to proceed further with the project. So, my next step is to make the nanomaterial protocol working in our lab in Oslo and do an interaction study with the complement proteins in vitro according to the original plan. Thanks for funding this project with internationalization support grant. We are very excited since we believe that this will lead to a bigger innovative project!”.

Dec. 10, 2017In June the UiO:Life Science board decided to support the newly established School of Health Innovation to contribute to further development of the school.
With this UiO:Life Science wants to contribute to establish a new strong player in the UiO ecosystem of innovation. The school is developed by the medical faculties at UiO, NTNU and Karolinska Institutet. The aim is to provide healthcare and life science researchers with tools and insight into how innovation can be put to work for the benefit of patients, the healthcare system and our society. The first rounds of course 1 and 2 started in 2017. The application deadline for the next round of course 1 "Health innovation and entrepreneurship" is 31 December 2017. The course is open for PhDs, postdocs and clinicians from medicine, psychology, odontology, technology and natural sciences.
At the kick-off meeting for course 2 “Entrepreneurship in healthcare” in September, administrative leader in UiO:Life Science, Morten Egeberg, talked about the activities in the initiative, especially the innovation part, and the ambitions for Oslo Life Science City.

Dec. 10, 2017In August we were present at Arendalsuka.
UiO:Life Science, LMI and Dagens Medisin hosted a debate on Growth and value creation in Norwegian Life Science.
How do we go from good intentions to actually getting more innovation out of the research and creating new jobs in the health industry? How will different political parties and others make sure that we reach the goals of becoming a life science nation?

Dec. 10, 2017In September UiO:Life Science became competence partner in Angel Challenge Health.
Norway Health Tech and Angel Challenge started this training programme for investors who want to get to know the health industry.
One of the companies in the programme is Smartlab Solutions which is founded by students from UiO who attended the international competition in synthetic biology iGEM in 2016. On the picture you see Ragnhild Bugge and Torleif Tollefsrud Gj?lberg, two of the students that developed a simple and quick test to detect antibiotic resistant bacteria and thereby avoid overuse and reduce the spreading of the resistance genes.

Dec. 10, 2017In September we had a full house when 2012 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Shinya Yamanaka, visited UiO.
Yamanaka gave a lecture about a new era of medicine with induced pluripotent stem cells – iPS cells – and participated in a panel discussion about the implications of stem cell therapy for patients and society. He also had lunch and a roundtable discussion with students and visited the Norwegian Center for Stem Cell Research at the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital.

Dec. 10, 2017In September we attended the Nordic Life Science Days 2017 in Malm?–Copenhagen.
UiO:Life Science and life science clusters and organisations promoted Norwegian life science at the Nordic Life Science Days (NLSDays) with support from Innovation Norway and the Research Council of Norway. Upper right: Irep G?zen from NCMM, the leader of one of the newly established convergence environments funded by UiO:Life Science, was the first speaker at the Academic Catwalk the first evening, and opened the conference. Bottom right: Norway's ambassador to Sweden, Christian Syse, and Tina Nordlander, Innovation Norway in Stockholm conversing with administrative leader in UiO:Life Science, Morten Egeberg.

Dec. 10, 2017In September we hosted an event at Oslo Urban Arena together with the City of Oslo.
The topic was Oslo Life Science City – how do we facilitate new businesses? The background for the event was the plan for a new life science building at UiO, that will be Norway's largest research and education building, and UiO’s ambitions to work closer with others to increase the degree of innovation. Also, the City of Oslo is working on a new campus strategy for Oslo. The life science building will be an engine for innovation and business development. What does it take to develop the entire Gaustadbekkdalen into a vibrant and attractive urban area for research, education, innovation and business development?
Per Morten Sandset, vice-rector for research and innovation at UiO, gave and introduction about UiO’s visions for Oslo Life Science City. Filippa Kull from Stockholm Science City shared her experiences from Hagastaden in Solna/Stockholm.
Jan Anders Istad, from the pharmaceutical company Novartis and Gro Bonesmo, arcitect, partner in Spacegroup and Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design participated in the debate with the Sandset and Kull.
Jan Fredrik Lockert, Head of Business Development and Diversity Unit in City of Oslo, moderated the debate.

Dec. 10, 2017In September we attended the Cutting Edge Festival in Oslo Science Park.
The festival showcases the latest in science, technology and entrepreneurship.
Several life science researchers from UiO were on stage among others (upper left) Irep G?zen from NCMM, the leader of one of the newly established convergence environments funded by UiO:Life Science, who tries to make artificial cells, (upper right) H?vard Haugen from the Faculty of Dentistry who develops new and innovative bone graft materials, (bottom left) Anders Fjell the leader of a world-class research group at the Department of Psychology and (bottom right) Steven Wilson from the Department of Chemistry who is one of the researchers in another convergence environment at UiO which will develop organs on a chip that can be used in testing of drugs among other things.

Dec. 10, 2017In September we had our first breakfast seminar at Nationaltheatret.
The topic was health data. The amount of information stored about us in the health service, and the amount of data that we collect with body sensors and smartphones, is growing. How is privacy secured, and what can happen when society knows too much about us? We debated on the background of this autumn's 1984 production at Nationaltheatret. From the right Ole Andreassen, Heidi Beate Bentzen, Gisle Hannemyr and Linn Stalsberg.

Dec. 10, 2017In September we hosted a debate on algae and sustainable innovation together with the Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board.
Algae can be used to make foods, medicines and energy. How can researchers, entrepreneurs, policy makers and investors help bring ideas to the market? From the left: Rene Wijffels (Wageningen University, The Netherlands), Gunvor ?ie (SINTEF), Margareth ?verland (Foods of Norway, NMBU) and Bente Edvardsen (UiO) who gave introductions before the debate. Moderator Ole Johan Borge (The Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board) to the right. Kristin Sandereid (Inven2), Arne Dessen (AlgiPharma) and Ole J?rgen Marvik (Innovation Norway) discussed the commercialization potential for algae at the end of the event.

Dec. 10, 2017In October we cheered over the life science building on the national budget for 2018!
The Government will allocate NOK 50 million from the 2018 national budget as a start-up grant for the new life science building at UiO – Norway’s largest research and education building. The news was broken already in September when Minister of Education and Research Torbj?rn R?e Isaksen visited UiO.

Dec. 10, 2017In October we hosted a Halloween breakfast seminar on vital but scary blood.
We brought two of our best lecturers, Steven Wilson and Anne Kveim Lie, to Nationaltheatret to talk about the importance of blood and its role in research, literature, movies and theatre. Dracula was of course on the agenda.

Dec. 10, 2017In November the first open call for our new innovation programme SPARK Norway was out.
SPARK Norway is a two-year innovation programme to further develop ideas within health-related life sciences for the benefit of patients and society. Researchers from UiO and affiliated research groups at OUS or Ahus can apply UiO:Life Science to be included in the programme through annual calls.

The application deadline for the first open call was 15 December 2017.

Dec. 10, 2017In November we have worked with the programme for the Oslo Life Science-Conference 2018.
This is the conference for all who are interested in research, education, innovation, business and politics in life sciences. Title in 2018: Investing in health and environment.
