Natalie de Souza
Biography
Natalie de Souza was for twelve years an editor of Nature Methods, for the last four as editor-in-chief. As such, she was part of the team that built the journal to what it is today. Before that, she obtained a PhD at the Rockefeller University where she studied folding and traffic of ion channels and did post-doctoral research at Columbia University on Notch signaling in cell fate specification during worm development.- Abstract
She will give a brief tour behind the scenes at Nature Methods, as an example of a high profile science journal, discussing the processes and the thinking that go into editorial decisions. She will give her perspective on the most common questions – big and small – that scientists typically pose about science publication and outline the habits of successful authors. Time-permitting, we can discuss strategies and policies that could improve science publishing more broadly.
Carl Henrik G?rbitz
Biography
Carl Henrik G?rbitz received his Ph.D. in structural chemistry from the University of Oslo (UiO) in 1990. After a postdoc. period at the University of Minnesota, he returned to UiO and worked as full Professor from 1996 to 2018 when he moved to the position as director of UiO:Life Science. He has worked as a co-editor of several journals, and is member of the Executive committee of the European Crystallographic Association (ECA). He has published about 170 papers in three categories: protein structures, smaller biomolecules, and crystal engineering.- Abstract
UiO:Life Science is strategic research initiative established by the University of Oslo (UiO) to stimulate, facilitate and support interdisciplinary research, innovation and education within health, environment and sustainability. A large part of the resources allocated for this purpose is used to fund Convergence environments. Six such groups were established in 2017, and were in 2019 joined by eight more (“the second generation”), among them ImmunoLingo. The talk will give a summary of UiO:Life Science's experiences so far and present some views on possible future paths for interdisciplinary life sciences at UiO.
Nils Chr. Stenseth
Biography
Nils Chr. Stenseth is an evolutionary biologist having worked on a broad spectrum of ecological systems - work he has done together with colleagues covering other disciplines than his own. He has also been the chair of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) – a center covering a broad spectrum of disciplines (mostly biological, though).- Abstract
In this lecture, he will describe what it takes to develop interdisciplinary teams – starting from questions to be answered. He will contrast this with developing "politically" structured multidisciplinary teams. He will draw on his own experience – to a large extent emerging out of chairing – and working within the CEES for about 15 years.
