Disturbing news about Ahmadreza Djalali

We are all shocked by this week's very disturbing news. Ahmadreza Djalali, imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin prison, has been placed in solitary confinement with the prospect of immediate execution.

The detainment and long-term imprisonment of Ahmadreza Djalali – Swedish citizen, alumnus of Karolinska Institutet and an respected expert in disaster medicine – is an attack not only on an individual researcher and his family, but on the entire academic community and the values we share.

I have pledged the Ambassador of Iran to Norway to do everything in his power to ensure that any plans to execute Ahmadreza Djalali are immediately halted and that his death sentence is quashed.

I have urged the Ambassador personally to engage to ensure that Mr. Djalali is treated humanely and returned home to his wife and children and to his scholarly work for the benefit of mankind.
