Curriculum

The curriculum is Martin and Shaw, Nuclear and Particle Physics - An Introduction, 3rd Edition, plus a compendium from Krane (there is some overlap with Martin and Shaw). Some chapters and sections of Martin and Shaw are omitted, as indicated below. The omitted material is worth reading, but those subjects will not be tested in assignments or examinations.

  • Chapter 1 - all
  • Chapter 2 - omit 2.1.3
  • Chapter 3 - omit 3.1.5, 3.1.6, 3.3.4
  • Chapter 4 - omit the entire chapter (subjects of FYS4505 and FYS4565)
  • Chapter 5 - omit 5.3.1, 5.6.2
  • Chapter 6 - all
  • Chapter 7 - all, but 7.4.2, 7.4.3 superficially 
  • Chapter 8 - all
  • Chapter 9 - 9.1 (Fission), ch 9.2.3 (Nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution), 9.4.1-9.4.3 (medical applications: focus on PET and proton therapy)
  • Chapter 10 - omit the entire chapter
  • Appendices A, C, and D - omit
    • (A.1-A.3 describes some useful results from quantum mechanics)
  • Appendix B - all
  • Compendium from Krane - omit 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 9.2, 9.3
