I may be a bit delayed this morning, but I will come. Should in principle be there on time

As we discussed in the lecture on Friday last week, we do not have any regular lectures this week. But we will have a question/discussion session Friday 1/12 at 9:15. As far as I can determine, it should be free in LilleFy as usual. If it turns out to be some there, we will find some other place.

After the lecture today and some meetings, I was exhausted and decided to cancel the lecture tomorrow to get a chance to rest. I hope I will be back on Friday.

I think the answer to the problem today about the extra time dependent exponential in the operator of A is that it should be without this factor. This is because we are working with the solution of the wave equation rather than transforming the equation to the HO form (like we did for the simple model of the vibrating string in the beginning of the semester). The solution has of course the time dependent factor, but this appears when the equation is solved and is not in the equation of motion itself.

I finally graded the midterm exams, sorry for the long delay. The results are posted here. We award 5 points per subproblem, with a max possible total of 90 points. We do not give a grade on this exam, but take the score into account when determining the final grade. If you disagree with any of the points, or want to know the reason for your score, please contact me.

We will now make it permanent to have lectures 12:15-13:00 on Wednesdays and 9:15-10:00 on Fridays. Normally, the Friday lectures will be in LilleFy, but on Nov. 10th it will be in room ?397. This should now all be in the calendar on the semester page.

Due to the theory seminar at 13:05 today, we will do as last week and have one hour lecture 12:15-13:00 today, and the second hour Friday 9:15-10:00

Next week, on Wednesday 25/10, we will discuss protocols for quantum cryptography. To prepare, it is useful to understand something about classical codes, and as a challenge to you I have prepared a secret message that you can try to decrypt. Completing this task is in no way necessary for progress in the course, and is mostly for fun.

In the lecture today (18/10) some students expressed the wish to attend the theory seminar at 13:00. Therefore we agreed to have only the first half of the lecture, and cover the second half (ion trap quantum computers) on Friday 20/10 9:15-10. The room is not clarified yet, I will come back to it.

It seems that there is a misprint in the exam problem just below the last circuit and above 2g) it is stated that

arg(ε) = arg(z) - π/2

I was informed that some students have to choose instead

arg(ε) = arg(z) + π/2

to get the stated result. I also now get this, and I believe I found the mistake in my original calculation, so I think the correct choice is

arg(ε) = arg(z) + π/2

In case some disagree, please tell me.

The midterm exam is now posted. In case there are questions about the problems or you find misprints, send me an email (joakim.bergli@fys.uio.no).

The midterm exam is a one week home exam. The problems will be published in the morning of Friday September 29. and solutions are due Friday October 6. at 14:00. Problems are given in Inspera, which should also be used to submit solutions. I will also post the problems on the course page in case of technical problems.

As we discussed in the lecture last week, it is probably better for most students not to have the problem solving session at 8 in the morning. We will from this week move it to Friday at 12:15-14 in the same room (?257). And I encourage you all to solve the problems, this is what you really learn from.
