We have postponed the OpenMC project - the new deadline is Friday Nov 8th at 23:59 :-)

After all the projector troubles in the Chemistry building, I've booked another room for the lecture on Wednesday Nov 6th.  We will be in the Physics building in room ?397.

Also, please prepare questions for Nils B?hmer about nuclear power (he is opposed to it).  I'd like it to become a debate.

I need feedback from you on how you think the course has been. What did you like? What did you not like? Suggestions for improvement? (on the lectures, OpenMC sessions. cabin trip, presentations, OpenMC project).  You can send an email, or put an anonymous note in my shelf in the expedition office in the Physics building. Also I need two student representatives that can meet me after the course is done, for a feedback session. This is not much work, just a 1h meeting or so:-) Please help me make this course better!

I have created a task under "assignments" in Canvas where you should hand in your OpenMC report. Please upload it as a PDF file,  and note the deadline of  Nov 7th 12:00.

I've gotten questions about how presicely your OpenMC reactor should be k=1. One decimal precision is fine

If you have the time, please take a look at today?s slides before the lecture (on Canvas) - then it will be easier to follow

I am very sorry to say that we have to cancel the trip to IFE next week. This is due to recent changes in IFE's security rules.

There will instead be a lecture by Steven at the usual time and place on Wednesday the 23rd.

Remember to bring a sleeping bag or bedsheets a tomorrow! Also bring soda/whatever you'd like to drink (we'll buy some snacks and chocolate + food for dinner and breakfast )

For those going from Blindern to Oslo S, we'll leave together from the lunch room at 13:00, to take the train L3 leaving 13:42 from Oslo S. You can also join us at Oslo S. We'll take the train to Snippen stasjon, and walk from there:-)

It's been a change of plans: The lecture on Monday will be at 14:15 in Curie, just like usual

I got some feedback that the OpenMC project description was confusing, and I have tried to make it clearer. The new version is now available on Canvas, please make sure that you have the latest version.

If you can't join the midterm exam cabin trip (and you haven't told me already), please do so asap, and I'll arrange a separate time for you to give your presentation.

You must pass the midterm exam in order to take the final exam in November.

Please sign up for the midterm exam/cabin trip asap using the following link:

The OpenMC exercises have now been published on Canvas. The first part of the exercises must be completed before the midterm exam.

Now I think everyone has OpenMC downloaded. The next step is to get the file "cross_sections.xml" and the folder "nndc_hdf5". On Canvas, I've uploaded a step-by-step guide "OpenMC_cross_sectionxml_todo" on how to get this set up properly. Please try to follow this guide, and tell me if you encounter any challenges.

Also, go through the exercise "Modelling a Pin Cell", and understand what happens.

On Thursday next week, we'll get started on the exercises. You'll be given a "startup script", so you don't have to build the reactor from scratch.

Please try to get OpenMC installed on your computer. This can be done through either Docker or GitHub. Tell us if you struggle, and we'll help:-)

For Docker installation, see:

https://github.com/sindrehk/FYS4580/blob/master/OpenMC%20Installation%20Instructions.pages

and/or "Installing with Docker" here:

https://docs.openmc.org/en/latest/quickinstall.html?highlight=Docker#installing-on-linux-mac-windows-with-docker

For installation from Source (GitHub), see:

https://docs.openmc.org/en/latest/quickinstall.html?highlight=Docker#installing-from-source-on-linux-or-mac-os-x

You have to have python3, and note that you should run "pip3 install  ." instead of "pip install .".

After installing:

Go through the "Modeling a Pin-Cell" example here (until you reach the exercise "The cross_sections.xml ...

Hi!

For the IFE-trip, we need a photo of your passport. This is for security reasons. Please email it to me asap on dorthea.gjestvang@fys.uio.no.

Are you wondering how nuclear reactors work? If nuclear energy is safe? Have you seen the HBO series "Chernobyl", and want to know more? Welcome to FYS4580!

The first lecture is on Mon. Aug 19th. We will give an introduction to the course, present an overview of what you will learn, and briefly talk about the computational code OpenMC that you will use to calculate criticality. We will also repeat some important nuclear physics topics, before moving on the "good stuff". Looking forward to getting started!
