The first week of lectures will correspond to chapter 1 of Spaces, the second week to chapter 2. I will be a bit quicker than the rest of the semester, so you might want to prepare in advance. It is out of the question to present the material of these chapters in a constructive manner, the focus will rather be on fine points.

Welcome to Real Analysis. Real Analysis is a beautiful topic but it is also hard. There are at least two reasons for that:

- the concepts are more abstract than in the traditional calculus/linear algebra sequence. We will study classes of functions rather than particular functions given by a formula.

- the exercises will consist in proving things rather than computing stuff.

You might want to refresh your memory about the proofs encountered in earlier courses. Consider them all as exercises.

You might also want to acquaint yourself with the book used for this course: Spaces by Tom Lindstr?m. Especially the first chapters which recap some prerequisites.

A course in proofs such as MAT1140 is highly recommended but not a formal prerequisite.
