Below follows the problem set for a voluntary term paper. * Formalities: - Voluntary. - This assignment has no formal status whatsoever. - Handing in or not will not affect any course grade. - If handed in, the quality of the paper will not affect any course grade. - Rules for compulsory assignments do not apply. * The purposes of the term paper, include - to offer you feedback on whether you are doing right or wrong - to offer you feedback on whether your justifications are sufficient, or possibly if you are wasting time writing unnecessarily long arguments. * Suggestions: - do not write a long and pretty paper. - rather, allocate three hours -- maybe a bit more, see below -- and try yourself in an exam-like situation. For that purpose: do not even look at the problems before starting the clock. - submit what you have written. Do not attempt to touch it up. However, if there was a part you simply could not do within the time frame, feel free to write a solution to that and include it. - Please include a front page with only name (unlike formal assignments, which are student-# based!) and course code. _Please_ staple. Properly. Or you might get only a fraction of it back. * Deadline: - Please hand in at the Wednedsday 20 lecture. - Submitted after? I'll have a look at it still, but don't expect timely feedback. * 3 hours' workload or not? - The first 4 problems are taken from two exams which had a total of 8 problem. This indicates that it would be approximately a full exam set. - It seems to me though that each of these sets have other problems which usually take a fair bit of time -- that is, the aforementioned 4 problems might not be the easiest half, but might be the shortest half. - Therefore I included exam problem 113. In total it is probably a bit above a full exam workload. * Problem set: Spring 2008 #3 and #4 Autumn 2008 #3 and #4 Exam problem 113.
