Seminar: The National versus the Foreigner in South America

Historical perspectives and implications for the legal responses to the Venezuelan displacement

The PRIO Migration Research Group and the Norwegian Centre for Humanitarian Studies welcome you to a seminar on Venezuelan displacement with Associate Professor of Migration and European Law at the University of Bristol, Dr Diego Acosta. In early June 2019, the UN agencies UNHCR and IOM announced that the number of Venezuelans leaving their country has reached 4 million , making Venezuelans one of the single largest population groups displaced from their country. In this seminar, Dr Acosta will give a presentation based on his latest book "The National versus the Foreigner in South America: 200 Years of Migration and Citizenship Law" (2018). In particular, he will dissect the legal responses that other countries in the region have given and that have been generally presented as open. Presently, Venezuela is one of the most dire humanitarian crises in terms of displacement on the globe, and other countries and regions can extract lessons from the South American response.

Time: Thursday, 20 June 2019 14:00-15:00

Place: PRIO, Hausmanns gate 3, Oslo
