Presentation

Different to traditional energy resources, renewable power generation using wind turbines are inherently intermittent, making planning and large-scale adoption challenging. To help facilitate wind energy integration, machine learning can be employed to develop tools for improved short-term forecasting and park modeling, to better inform operators on expected power outputs. At the Department of Technology Systems (ITS) at UiO, we collaborate closely with IFE, who are currently leading a project entitled Electrification of Oil and Gas Installation by Offshore Wind (ELOGOW), where the aim is to electrify oil and gas rigs using wind turbines. Machine learning will be used as a key tool for improving the energy security and provide the necessary confidence for operators to turn off gas turbines during times of sufficient renewable energy. In this talk, I will aim to give an overview of some of the key challenges associated with wind energy, and how we aim to tackle some of these with the use of machine learning.

Speaker

Lars ?. Bentsen is a Doctoral Research Fellow in machine learning applied to wind-based technologies at the Department of Technology Systems, UiO. He started his Ph.D. in the fall of 2020, after graduating with an M.Eng. degree in New and Renewable Engineering from Durham University, UK. For a full list of his publications and previous experience, you can check out his website at https://larsbentsen.github.io/.

Program

11:30 – Doors open and lunch is served

12:00 – "Using machine learning to improve energy utilisation for offshore wind turbiness" by Lars ?degaard Bentsen (PhD Candidate, Department of Technology Systems)

This event is open for all PhD candidates and postdocs. No registration needed.

About the seminar series

Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch, soft drinks and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch to PhD candidates in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies hus every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here (download).

Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long! Read more about the seminar series here.
