dScience Lunch Seminar: Unfolding with Gaussian Processes

Welcome to our weekly lunch seminar held in the dScience lounge area! This event is open to PhD candidates and postdocs.

Presentation

Unfolding of nuclear spectra means to compensate for the detector response in order to infer the true nuclear events from experimental data. This is an essential part of the Oslo method, which is used to simultaneously extract the nuclear level density and the g-ray strength function of a nucleus. These quantities are fundamental for the determination of astrophysical reaction rates, and in the study of how the heavy elements are created.

By utilizing the power of Gaussian Processes (GPs), the objective of the project is to improve the unfolding in the Oslo method, especially when it comes to obtaining more rigorous uncertainty estimates. GPs represent a versatile tool for fitting unknown functions, and they assign higher probability to functions that agree with observations.

During Mj?s' presentation, he will focus on explaining the basic concepts of unfolding and GPs, and the most important steps of their algorithm. Unfolding is a very difficult problem as the response is ill-conditioned. The implications of this and the challenges that they have, will also be discussed.

Program

11:30 – Doors open and lunch is served

12:00 – "Unfolding with Gaussian Processes" by Andreas Halkjelsvik Mj?s (PhD Candidate, Nuclear and Energy Physics, Department of Physics, UiO)

This event is open for all PhD candidates and postdocs. No registration needed.

About the seminar series

Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch, soft drinks and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch to PhD candidates in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies hus every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here (download).

Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long! Read more about the seminar series here.
