What is UiO:Energy and Environment

UiO:Energy and Environment is one of the university's three interdisciplinary initiatives. The aim of the initiative is to contribute to a large-scale energy transition while reducing climate and environmental issues. The transition must be just and take consequences on ecosystems and biodiversity into account.

UiO:Energy and Environment has targeted measures towards research, education, outreach and innovation within energy, climate and environment.

Our approach is interdisciplinary. By bringing together expertise from law, the social sciences, humanities, technology and natural sciences, our researchers contribute to new solutions for clean, affordable and reliable energy produced in a sustainable way.

We work both within UiO and in collaboration with other research institutions and with non-academic partners.

UiO:Energy and Environment has four main research areas and three cross-cutting themes - based on society's needs, strong research environments at the University of Oslo, and opportunities for external funding.

Research

UiO:Energy and Environment finance seven thematic research groups and two convergence environments at the University of Oslo within topics related to the development of sustainable energy systems and society.

The University of Oslo is the host institution and coordinator of one Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) as well as a research partner in six other FME-centres. UiO:Energy and Environment is partner in one of them, but also works with all the others.

Studies

UiO:Energy and Environment offers interdisciplinary courses that are open to students across all study programmes. The courses combine lectures from different disciplines with project work and excursions.

Outreach

We are a platform for engagement, and bring industry, students, governmental bodies and the research community together. The aim is to stimulate innovative and creative solutions for a sustainable transition.

UiO:Energy and Environment also promotes new collaborations and research projects through conferences, workshops and open lectures.
