Design Thinking continues to be a popular approach for solving problems involving humans, and many organizations continue to explore its use in advancing innovation in learning, product design, wellness among others. Joseph Makokha, PhD. is a postdoctoral research fellow at University of Oslo Institute of Informatics (IFI), in the ENT group within the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He specializes in collaborative artificial intelligence (AI) systems that augment humans on thinking tasks such as designing, hence works at the intersection of innovative teams, design and artificial intelligence.

In this activity-based workshop, we will engage with several AI tools as part of an introductory Design Thinking sprint. We will collaborate in small teams on solving an assigned task using this method, together with a set of AI applications deemed appropriate for such a task. Prototyping supplies will be provided, and it is encouraged to bring a computer for web browsing. By the end of the session, you may have a strong opinion on whether we should just let machines think for us or not.

In addition to teaching, Joseph runs experimental studies involving a variety of AI systems to explore their impact on creativity, perception, decision making, collaboration, team dynamics, among others. He has a bachelors degree in EE/CS (Nairobi, Kenya), masters degrees in Education (Holy Names and Stanford in the US), and a PhD in Mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
