A new design for the Program for Basic Competence in University Pedagogy

In response to UiO’s aims and the changing needs of the participants, we have developed a new design for the Program for Basic Competence in University Pedagogy.

We build on research on higher education and learning theories, responses from course participants and educational leaders, national and UiO guidelines for university pedagogical competence, as well as long-term experiences with university pedagogy at our university.

Rachelle Esterhazy has been leading the redesign work together with Molly Sutphen.

– Redesigning a long-standing study program can feel like steering a massive ship - it requires time, dedication and a coordinated effort from all hands on deck, reflects Rachelle on the process, and adds on

– It is great to see that we are now ready to set sail and take our first passengers on board from next year on.

The redesigned program will be launched in January 2024 with admissions to the new introductory module opening October 2nd, 2023.

What is new in the redesigned Program?

The redesigned program builds on the elements of the current program, incorporating participant feedback and experience. Key changes include:

  • Closer links between theory and practice through concrete examples and hands-on activities
  • Increased focus on ways of using digital technology in your teaching
  • Closer follow-up of peer-mentor groups
  • Updated elective modules to address recent developments and challenges in higher education
  • Showing concrete ways of how to document pedagogical development for your own professional development
  • Mandatory pedagogical development projects that contribute to the development of your local unit

To know about the program

The program runs over two semesters with a total of 200 hours

  • Semester 1: Introductory module inclusive work in peer-mentoring groups
  • Semester 2: Pedagogical development project and choice between several elective modules

Permanent staff with teaching duties are prioritised as a target group of the program. A more compact program is currently in development for temporary staff.

Transition to EVUweb

Paola L?vland is a master mind behind administration of the university pedagogy program. She has been working on her end with transition to EVUweb for the redesigned courses administration.

– It provides a highly effective course management system and saves a significant amount of time. This frees up time that I can use to focus on more essential aspects of course operations, such as improving the participant experience, says Paola as she adds on.

– EVUweb keeps applicants updated and informed throughout the admission process. Applicants may receive automatic updates on the status of their application. By allowing applicants to themselves withdraw their application, they also save time as they no longer have the need to contact the administration.

Work in progress

Nicoline Fr?lich started her position as head of LINK Centre when the redesign work process has been starting.

– I am impressed and have great respect for the extensive work that has been done, and I am looking forward to seeing how it will continue to develop, and hearing what our participants think, says Nicoline.
