RITMO is funded by the Research Council's Centre of Excellence (SFF) scheme. The SFF scheme gives Norway’s best researchers the opportunity to organise their research activities in centres that seek to achieve ambitious scientific objectives through collaboration and with long-term basic funding.

The research conducted at an SFF must be innovative and have major potential to generate ground-breaking results that advance the international research frontier. The centres must work with ambitious ideas and complex problems that require coordinated, long-term research activities within or across disciplines to achieve their objectives.

In 2019-2020, the scheme was evaluated as a great success by an international committee of experts. The committee strongly recommends that the scheme is continued, and keeps it status as the main funder of innovative and high-risk research in Norway. Amongst other results, the centres have greatly contributed to the amount of ERC grants awarded to Norway.
