Two textbooks could be useful reading (but are not obligatory):
John A. Knauss, "Introduction to Physical Oceanography", 2nd ed., Waveland press, 2005 (available at Akademika). A new version of this book is also out.
Robert H. Stewart, "Introduction to Physical Oceanography", online-book, 2008 (can be downloaded here).
