The Yellow Hub

Yellow Hub is a guide on creating a good neighborhood house, based on existing neighborhood houses and young adults' wishes.

Project Description

The project Yellow Hub focuses on giving young adults in the age group 18-25 at Furuset the space to share their opinions on their local area, and a neighborhood house being built by OBOS. The result of this project is a guideline that OBOS can use when deciding the final purpose of the neighborhood house.

Context

Project leader, Hanne L?vbr?tte at OBOS, informed the group about how the age group 18-25 has not been involved in their participation processes at Furuset. This group of young adults are not to be found in one place. They might study, work or in general spend their time outside of Furuset, as there are no set indoor meeting places for this age group at Furuset. To make the young adults have a reason to spend more of their time in their local community, the neighborhood house OBOS is developing might be the answer.

Project Outcomes

The final project consists of a written guide tailored to the Furuset Village project. The content is spread over 30 pages, and designed to be a booklet through Canva. This was distributed both as a physical book and as a PDF format on the release date December 7th, 2022. In addition to being fit for OBOS' project in Furuset, the guide provides advice and recommendations for neighborhood houses in general and is therefore scalable for other local, national and international projects.

The group gathered 33 answers from young adults through a survey, and visited three different neighborhood houses already existing in Oslo. Through the responses and lessons learned from the visits at the neighborhood houses, a guide was made and delivered to OBOS in a final meeting. Using the guide, OBOS could develop a good neighborhood house that might also be tailored to the age group 18-25.

City Connection

The "Oslo Municipal Plan" for 2040 lacks information about social sustainability and how to implement it. The documents discuss the need for such places, however nowhere does it state how to create these meeting places. The concept of social sustainability and its effects on society must be taken into account if we aim to build cities for the people living, or going to be living there. The city of Oslo will gain value by having a guide to create a well-functioning neighborhood house that will strengthen the social cohesion in the area of ??Furuset, and as a consequence also strengthen social sustainability in the city of Oslo.
