Seven new academics to work on Circle U.

UiO is one of the nine partners in the university alliance Circle U. Now, six new Academic Chairs, as well as an Academic Director, have been appointed. These are part-time positions with a special responsibility for developing educational activities and opportunities across the universities.

"It has been a privileged and challenging task to select among many qualified applicants for these positions. The appointees all demonstrate strong motivation, good ideas, and qualifications that we believe fit well within Circle U. With the three Academic Chairs continuing from the pilot period, we now have a team in place spanning different disciplines, and together with colleagues from our partner universities, they can develop exciting academic projects and educational opportunities," says Bj?rn Stensaker, Vice-Rector for Education and Leader of Circle U at UiO.

Climate, democracy, health, educational innovation, and language

The new positions will be distributed across some of Circle U.'s platforms, namely the Knowledge Hub on Climate, Knowledge Hub on Democracy, Knowledge Hub on Global Health, as well as the Teaching and Innovation Lab and the Multilingualism, Interculturality, and Language Lab.

The new Chairs are:

  • Marianne Zeyringer, Associate Professor, Department of Technological Systems, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Knowledge Hub Climate.
  • Hilde Reinertsen, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, Faculty of Humanities. Knowledge Hub Democracy.
  • Jens Jungblut, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences. Knowledge Hub Democracy.
  • Christoph Gradmann, Professor, Institute of Health and Society, Faculty of Medicine. Knowledge Hub Global Health.
  • Pia Lane, Professor, Center for Multilingualism, Faculty of Humanities. Multilingualism, Interculturality, and Language Lab.
  • Nicoline Fr?lich, Professor, LINK - Center for Learning, Education and Academic Development. Teaching and Innovation Lab.

Leading the democracy initiative in Circle U.

In addition, Dan Banik, Professor at the Centre for Development and Environment, will serve as the Academic Director in the Knowledge Hub on Democracy. This role leads the work in the Hub.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to be involved in the establishment of groundbreaking research projects and teaching modules. Additionally, I look forward to the role of Academic Director and actively contribute to the strategic development and implementation of the Circle U ecosystem," says Dan Banik.

Eivind Engebretsen holds the role of Dean for Open Campus in Circle U., which will be the gateway for educational opportunities within the university alliance.

"I am excited to collaborate with Dan Banik as the Academic Director and all the new Academic Chairs to further develop and scale up activities in Circle U.," says Eivind Engebretsen.

Three academics continue as Academic Chairs:

  • Beate Sj?fjell, Professor, Department of Private Law. Faculty of Law. Knowledge Hub Climate.
  • Markus Bugge, Associate Professor, TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture, Faculty of Social Sciences. InCubator.
  • Lisbeth M. Brevik, Professor, Department of Teacher Education and School Research, Faculty of Educational Sciences. Open Campus.

UiO now has a total of 11 faculty members involved in Circle U.

About Chairs:

Academic Chairs are appointed for a two-year period, with the possibility of an additional two-year extension. During this time, appointees are relieved of 20% of their regular research and teaching positions at the University of Oslo.

Each partner within the alliance appoints Academic Chairs. They serve as academic links between Circle U's various platforms and play a crucial role in developing offerings and opportunities for students and staff.
