Diplomatic efforts to create peace are failing worldwide. Atrocities occur regularly in armed conflicts in Israel/Palestine, Sudan, Ukraine, the Sahel, Yemen, Myanmar, the DRC, Ethiopia and Syria, to mention some, raising the question - why is it so difficult to establish peace?

The conflicts of modern day are increasingly complex and protracted, include a diverse set of actors, technologically advanced weapons, and take place within a context of changing geopolitics and increased militarization. Does this impact the prospects for a sustainable peace?

For this year's UN Theme Week, UNSA Oslo has invited a panel of experts to reflect upon and discuss the following:

  • What characterizes conflicts today, and how does this impact the prospects for peace?
  • How could our approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding be adapted to meet these challenges?
  • What implications could this have for the United Nations’ role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding?

Panel discussion with:

  • Jenny Lorentzen, NUPI
  • Haakon Gjerl?w, PRIO
  • Fredrik Gr?svik, former foreign correspondent for TV2
  • Gerald Folkvord, Political Advisor Amnesty
