Workplace assessment

A workplace assessment is a mapping of various aspects of an employee’s workplace with the aim of preventing musculoskeletal disorders or to avoid a worsening of any afflictions.

What is important for a workplace?

  • There are many good working positions. The most important aspect is for employees to be able to vary their positions. The workplace shall be adapted so that natural and appropriate working positions and movements are available to each individual employee.
  • Employees are different, and equipment must therefore be adjustable, so that it can be adapted to the individual`s needs.
  • Appropriate aids shall be available as required. There shall be procedures for when aids are to be used, and there shall be room to use them effectively.

How is a workplace assessment conducted?

  • Workplace assessments are conducted by an occupational physiotherapist who has special expertise in work-related musculoskeletal disorders and ergonomics
  • The assessment is conducted by an inspection and conversation with the employee
  • Often, all that is required is making small adjustments or advice regarding the appropriate use of furniture and equipment. At other times, the workplace must be adapted more extensively and special aids used, so that employees can do their job with fewer afflictions.
  • Workplace assessments can be conducted in all types of work situations

What can you do yourself?

  • Familiarize yourself with the adjustment options for furniture and equipment, and adjust them to your own body and needs. See how you can adapt your office space before contacting the Occupational health service unit. Vary your working positions, take short breaks and move as much as possible during your work day!
