Academic mentoring programme

All new permanent academic staff as well as postdocs, researchers and completion grantees, are followed up through our academic mentoring programme.

New permanent academic staff

All new employees will automatically be entered into the mandatory academic mentoring programme at the Faculty of Humanities and be assigned a mentor. In addition to the activities of the faculty's programme, the mentoring consists of at least five meetings between mentor and mentoree, as well as the mentor's presence at minimum two lectures or seminars given by the mentoree. This may be distributed over one or two semesters and will be credited with 35 hours for both mentor and mentoree in our 'arbeidspliktregnskap'.

Any topic relevant to teaching can be brought up in the meetings between mentor and mentoree, but it is natural to at least touch on the following subjects:

  • General information about studies and teaching at UiO, forms of teaching and assesment used, course descriptions, important terminology, deadlines, routines and regulations
  • Who to contact about what in the administration
  • Lecture plans and curricula, compulsory teaching activities and exam questions, how and what to use and where to find earlier examples of questions and activities

It might also be useful to let the mentoree attend the mentor's lectures or seminars provided there is mutual consent about this.

Postdocs and researchers

All postdocs and researchers will be given an academic supervisor. Postdocs and reasearchers affiliated with research projects will normally be assigned their project leader as supervisor. MSCA postdocs already have a supervisor before applying. All other postdocs and researchers will be assigned a supervisor by their Head of subject.

The supervision will be closely interrelated with establishing and developing of the postdoc's or researcher's career development plan (download as PDF or MS Word document)

Postdocs and researchers with teaching obligations will, in addition, be appointed an academic mentor; normally the Head of subject in question. The academic mentor will guide and counsel the postdoc or researcher in questions regarding the teaching part of the job, in accordance with the principles outlined under new permanent staff above.

Completion grantees

All completion grantees will be assigned an academic mentor, usually the Head of subject. The mentor will guide and assist them when it comes to teaching, as well as with the pursuit of the grantee's academic goals such as publishing and working on postdoctoral projects.

After completion of the mentor programme, a short report outlining the dates of meetings or other activities must be submitted to the administrative contact. The report is a prerequisite for hours to be credited the mentor's arbeidspliktregnskap.
