Return to work

When you return to work after a sick leave, it is important that you are explicit about any need for workplace adaptations. Please also note that during the first period of your return to work you will have limited rights to a salary while sick.

Workplace adaptations

  • When you are in the process of returning to work, you can discuss possible adaptations in the workplace with your immediate superior to ensure a good start after your sick leave.
  • You may have special needs that must be attended to in a transitional period and that should be clarified in advance.
  • In such contexts, the Occupational Health Service can provide advice and guidance.
  • Read more about the opportunities for workplace adaptations.

Earning new sickness benefits rights

  • You will earn new rights to sickness benefits when you resume work.
  • You can use your self-certification days and medically certified sick leave as of day 17 after your return to work.
  • During the accrual period, you can be on sick leave within 16 calendar days.
  • After working full time for 6 months, you will have gained new rights to sickness benefits for 1 year.
  • Note: If you also receive a work assessment allowance from NAV, you will not earn new rights to sickness benefits from NAV or UiO.
