Preparing for an ERC application with UiO as host institution

Preparing for an ERC application is in some aspects different from other external research funding proposals. Here you can find some advice about applying for an ERC, and information about the support at UiO.

There are three ERC core funding schemes and two additional schemes, with annual calls. To learn more about the funding schemes, please consult our pages about ERC and The European Research Council web pages . Please also consult our pages about applying for a Horizon Europe project for general advice regarding the application process.

Checklist for ERC applications

At the start of the application process it can be useful to have an overview of the process up to proposal deadline, to make sure that all aspects are covered. UiO has made an ERC application checklist for H2020 that in now being updated for Horizon Europe.

ERC eligibility window

ERC Starting and Consolidator has certain eligibility criteria based on the date of award of the applicant's first PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree). For PhD degrees aquired at UiO, we recommend to use the date of defence of viva when calculating eligibility.

The consultancy firm Enspire has published an eligibility calculator that can be used for checking eligibility

Application through online Funding and Tender Portal

The application must be submitted through EU's application system Research Funding and Tender Portal by finding and choosing the call you want to apply for. Please consult the Proposal submission service user manual for more information about how to set up your application in the Portal (external).

Register UiO as host institution by entering the PIC number: 999975814,  and Short name: UiO. In addition, to register the proposal you have to enter title, acronym and an abstract which must all be available at the time of setting up the application. None of these are binding, so you can enter preliminary text and change it all the way up to the deadline.

Application support at UiO

UiO would like to support ERC applicants through the application process. Front line assistance is offered by the departments' research advisors, but research support personnel at faculty- and central level can also be of assistance if needed.

ERC Ethics process

UiO has developed a short overview of the ERC ethics process, which starts at the stage where the projects is planned and runs through the whole project lifetime. When filling out the proposal template, you have to identify ethics issues and explain how you will handle them. Please see ERC Ethics prosess for more information and useful links.

Approval of the proposal

Make sure to have the approval of the Head of Department for applying. The Department will be hosting the actual project and fulfill the obligations in the host support letter (see below).

Budgeting

For budgeting of your ERC project proposal, you should contact you local economy function and research advisor. UiO templates for budgeting EU projects, including ERC, are under development and will soon be published at Budsjettering av bidragsprosjekter (Norwegian)

ERC Supporting Documentation

ERC requires a Commitment of the host institution (host support letter) attached to the application. This letter is signed by the University Director and  is issued by the UiO EU-office. You need to provide a short confirmation from your Head of Department that the application is supported by the unit, as well as the applicant's full name and title, proposal acronym and full title. It is not necessary to fill in the actual template, this will be handled by UiO's EU Office.

For ERC Starters and Consolidators, a PhD certificate is also required. The certificate must be presented in an official EU language (e.g. English). Contact the unit at your faculty responsible for issuing PhD certificates if translation is needed.

For Starters and Consolidators, the time elapsed since award of the PhD can be considered reduced due to parental leave, long term illness, clinical training or national service. For parental leave, documented birth certificates for the children in English can be obtained the National Registry. See the ERC Work Programme at the Funding and Tender portal for rules and details
