What is a democracy? How do democracies work in practice? How can they be undermined, how can we maintain and strengthen them? These are some of the questions raised in the interdisciplinary research initiative UiO:Democracy.

Main thematic tracks
UiO:Democracy aims to establish a collective ownership to research on democracy. The following thematic tracks will be explored through interdisciplinary research and cooperation:
- Democracy as a form of governance and the institutions of democracy
- Citizens, diversity, and inequality
- The role and function of knowledge
- Democracy and crisis management
- Democracy in everyday life
In addition to these thematic tracks, UiO:Democracy has three cross-cutting dimensions: sustainability, globalization, and digitalization. This is described in UiO:Democracy’s Foundational document (PDF).
