News about two-factor authentication at UiO

Many have already activated two-factor authentication for Microsoft 365 at UiO, and on 20 June the project will continue with the activation of two-factor authentication requirements for services that use Feide login for both faculty/staff and students. From 20 June students will also need two-factor authentication for MS 365, which faculty/staff has used for some time already.

Well underway

USIT, the IT department at UiO, has this spring introduced two-factor authentication for logging in to Microsoft 365 for all faculty and staff, and on 15 June, the new login will also be ready for services with login via Feide. And on June 20, when the majority of exams are over, there will be a requirement for two-factor authentication for MS 365 and Feide for the students as well.

Two good news

– The first good news is that we are increasing the security of the data and IT systems at UiO. And in these times, we really have to put safety first, explains project manager Frank Paul Silye. – The project would like to thank all faculty and staff who are up and running after reading instructions and setting up for two-factor with the app or another method. More than 5,000 employees are using two-factor authentication, and it has gone great, with few inquiries for support and many logins.

– The other good news is that this is now easier. If you have first set up two-factor authentication for logging in to Microsoft 365, then you are just one click away from two-factor authentication also for logging in with Feide, says Silye.

Changed login for Feide

Skjermbilde av ny p?loggingsknapp i FeideOn Wednesday 8 June, the login window for all services at UiO that use Feide will change. Project manager Silye encourages all IT users at UiO to start using the new "Use work or school account" button instead of the traditional login with username and password. This is so that you can use the same two-factor authentication solution as for MS 365, as mentioned above.

Project owner and IT security manager at UiO, Espen Gr?ndahl, says that the reorganization of the login in Feide will simplify everyday life for most of us, in that only two-factor authentication is required every 30 days and that users during this period will remain logged in Feide services. This means that you will see login windows less often, at the same time as UiO increases security.

What's up?

  • Now username and password are not secure enough alone. You have to use a second factor, for most this is your mobile phone, when you log in.
  • If you have not set up to use two-factor authentication with login to MS 365, you must do so now, since this secure login must now also be used for more and more services with Feide login.
  • Remember to select Use work or school account in the Feide login window.
    • Then you can use the same solution as for MS 365. You only get a confirmation request which you respond to in the app or in the way you have set up.
    • If you have not already set up for two-factor authentication, you must do so now. You must install an authentication app on your mobile and connect the app with your login.

The way forward

IT security manager Gr?ndahl is happy that the project is on schedule and that there will be a two-factor for employees with Feide login already now before the summer. No problems are expected with the rollout of two-factor authentication on the Feide services, as the solution has already been used by several universities and colleges.

Do you want to know more?

Two-factor authentication is now an IT service at UiO, so you will find information and guidelines on the IT service pages. To make it easy, the introductory project has created a shortcut to it called uio.no/tofaktor. To get the best user experience when you now have to confirm login with an app on your mobile, the introductory project recommends that you read the guide and make the settings recommended there. Then you do not have to confirm with a code, but just need to press "Approve" in the app on your mobile.
