Installing OneDrive on your work computer

Office 365 is not only a way to install all the Office applications. Office 365 allows you to use the Office applications online without downloading them, and: you get OneDrive.

What is OneDrive?

OneDrive is your own online disk. It enables you to upload, download, save and share documents. You can also collaborate on documents with other OneDrive users. You can access your OneDrive disk from any computer with a web browser.

In addition to this, everything you save on your local OneDrive folder, will be automatically syncronized to your online disk. This means that you can gain access to your files both in your browser and on all the computers (maximum five) you have installed OneDrive on. If you have installed OneDrive on the computer you are using, you can open the local OneDrive folder. If OneDrive is not installed, you have to log in on a web browser.

OneDrive is installed together with the Office applications from Office 365. Because the office computers at the UiO are only allowed to use a UiO supported version of the Office applications, a special installation for office computers at UiO has been developed.

What about office computers at UiO?

Office from Office 365 is not to be installed on office computers at UiO. These computers are managed by UiO IT personnel and will, at any given time, have the UiO supported version of Office installed on your work computer. This will not always be the same version as in Office 365.

USIT has made a special installation of OneDrive that you can download from Software Center. This installation installs OneDrive on your Office computer so that your office computer, home computer and laptop can work together seamlessly.

This installation will automatically synchronize the documents you save in your OneDrive folder on your work computer with OneDrive online and OneDrive on any other device where you are using Office 365.

How to install OneDrive on a UiO office computer 

  1. Log in on your office computer. Open Internet Explorer and go to software.uio.no.
  2. Type "OneDrive" in the search field in the top right and click Enter. Click on OneDrive for Business and then Install on the bottom right.
  3. When the installation is done, wait for about a minute before you open the Start menu on your computer. Type in "OneDrive" in the search field. Microsoft OneDrive should now appear.



First time use

  1. When you open OneDrive from your computer for the first time you will be asked to fill in your e-mail adress. Do this and click Sign in.
  2. The next page is where you log on to your work or school user account. Type in your username followed by @uio.no.
    1. If you have automatic login on your computer you will be sent directly to the OneDrive guide after you have filled in username@uio.no.
    2. If you have manual login on your computer you will be sent to the UiO login site. Choose Weblogin (only UiO). Fill in your username and password in Weblogin.
  3. You should now have reached the OneDrive guide and the OneDrive folder on your computer will open. Amongst other things you have to choose what you want to be synchronized from OneDrive online to the OneDrive folder on your computer. This is because you have unlimited storage space on your OneDrive but not on your computer. If you store a large amount on OneDrive you may risk filling up your computer completely. This is why we urge you to choose spesific folders, preferably work related folders you need access to from different computers. Remember, even though you have not synchronized all your folders, you can still access all your OneDrive content from OneDrive online. If you do not have any content on your OneDrive yet, you can specify which folders you want to synchronize later.
  4. At the end of the guide you can open your OneDrive folder by clicking Open my OneDrive - Universitetet i Oslo folder.

    It is in this folder all documents are stored when you choose Save as in an Office application and the folder OneDrive - Universitetet i Oslo. This folder is synchronizes with OneDrive online. This means that everything you store in this folder will be available to you from every device you log in to and has a web browser. You may have noticed another folder, OneDrive - Personal, has been installed. This folder has no use. Choose OneDrive - Universitetet i Oslo whenever you are storing on OneDrive.
