The previous degree system

The current degrees bachelor, master, and PhD were introduced in 2003. Most of the previous degrees were phased out between 2003 and 2007.

Lower degree

The lower degree candidatus/candidata magisterii (cand.mag.) was typically obtained after 3 1/2-4 years of study at the undergraduate level.

The standard study period was 4 years for a degree with academic weight in historical-philosophical and social science subjects or a generally comprehensive degree. The standard study period was 3 1/2 years for a degree with academic weight in natural sciences.

Higher degree

The master's degrees were typically obtained after 1 1/2-2 years of study and provided specialization in the major subject based on the minor subject in the cand.mag. degree. An important part of the major subject was an independent research project in the form of a master's thesis.

The professional programs were integrated programs lasting 5-7 years. Three of these degrees were continued even after 2003: cand.med., cand.psychol., and cand.theol.

Doctoral degree

The doctoral degrees were typically obtained after 3 years of study following the completion of the master's degree or other professional programs.
