Why choose this programme option?

Would you like to understand how life functions, right down to the atomic level, or how research into biomolecules and nanomaterials can solve socially relevant biological or medical problems? If you choose the specialisation Biomolecules and Biomaterials, you can focus your work on improvements in health, the environment and energy.

In modern biochemical and biomedical research, we study biomolecules and their structure and function assisted by modern equipment and advanced techniques. As a student, you will work with understanding the properties of proteins and enzymes and the way they function on a molecular level, in order to solve problems within health, the environment and energy.

By combining natural and synthetic components, we can create nanomaterials such as nanoparticles that can be used for encystment and molecularly targeted therapy, or for tissue regeneration. The function in biological contexts can be simulated with the help of bio-inspired materials. This has considerable potential for increasing our understanding of complicated biological phenomena and for new biomedical innovation.

The programme option Biomolecules and Biomaterials gives students with a solid background from a bachelor's degree in chemistry or biology the opportunity to delve deeper into the theoretical and practical basis of research in the field, with either a chemistry or biology bias.

The programme places particular emphasis on a research-based thesis, providing training in laboratory work, report writing, presentation and the analysis of research results.
