Why choose this programme option?

Do you enjoy telling others about chemistry?  Would you like to develop better teaching resources? Are you interested in what motivates pupils and students, and what type of teaching stimulates understanding? If you are aiming for a career in teaching, education research or research communication in natural sciences, this is the choice for you.

Chemistry education as a research area is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection between chemistry, didactics, psychology and sociology. Research addresses questions such as what types of teaching motivates learning in chemistry, why people should study chemistry, and what subjects should be included in chemistry training for various groups of pupils and students. The field can also be combined with courses in scientific outreach.

A master's thesis in chemistry education may involve observing teaching in schools or colleges, and gathering and analysing data related to pupils' or students' motivation or learning. You can also develop your own curricular activities and test them. Other thesis topics in chemistry didactics are more theoretical in character. Another option is to analyze how public media or text books present different chemistry topics.

As a master's student in chemistry didactics you will be working with professional chemists, teachers, educational researchers and groups of didactic specialists from other natural sciences.
