Why choose this programme option?

Are you interested in mathematical methods and algorithms, where they come from, how they can be programmed and how they can be used? In this programme option, this is the main focus, often combined with applications of the algorithms.

Computations and mathematical algorithms have played a fundamental role in the vast technological developments we have seen over the past decades. For example, our mobile phones, google searches and computer games are all heavily based on mathematics. Our dependency on applied mathematics and algorithms is steadily increasing, although this is often hidden “under the hood” for the average user. If you are interested in understanding, using or developing mathematical methods and algorithms for solving important and challenging real-life problems, the program option “Applied Mathematics and Risk Analysis” may be what you are looking for.

Real world applications often involve huge datasets, where the objective can be to extract useful information, such as risk in a complex project, an oil reservoir in seismic data or a tumor in a medical image. Other applications may require the development of suitable representations of sound, geometry or image data, or simulating some physical phenomenon.

A typical project in “Applied Mathematics and Risk Analysis” may include the formulation of mathematical models, the construction, testing and validation of numerical algorithms, software development, visualization / graphics, and assessment of the quality of calculated results. The objective could be to work with all of these aspects or specifically focus on one or some of them.
