How did you get the job?
I started applying for positions the same semester as writing my master thesis. I was called in for an interview and was lucky to get it.
What do you think were the most important factors for being offered the job?
I think that the Master's Degree in Economics from UiO was crucial.
I wrote my master's thesis on a topic that was related to what I am working on now - I think that contributed positively.
Summer jobs and other experiences I have gained during the study period also contributed positively. For example, I have had a summer job at a DNB office, and volunteered in a youth organization and in the Red Cross.
What are your tasks in your current job?
I work in the section for industry and FoU statistics (Research and development in the business enterprise sector).
My main responsibility is to help run and publish the production index on oil, gas, industry, mining and power supply.
My section collects production figures from the industrial companies that are used in the sample of statistics. An important task is to revise and quality control these figures.
In addition to this, I analyze the developments in the various industries, something I find very exciting.
How is the knowledge you acquired through studying economics relevant to your current job?
The most important aspect is a general understanding of economic mechanisms and the training I have had in thinking analytically. In addition, I have benefited from courses on statistics and econometrics.
Do you have any career advice for new students?
When many people apply for the same position, grades do matter. At the same time, it is positive to be able to show experience from a part-time job or volunteer work for a student organization.
Experience from being an exchange student may help you stand out from other applicants. Traveling is a great opportunity for professional and personal development.
I would also recommend using the Career Center at UiO. They will assist in proofreading your CV and application. I was there several times the semester I wrote my applications, which was very helpful.
