Abstract:

In the North of Argentina, a species of large, colorful birds - the green-winged macaw - is being reintroduced into its natural habitat. After disappearing from local ecosystems about 150 years ago, captive macaws are bred and trained for the wild, so that they might repopulate the area.

What is it like to move from the cage of a zoo to an open forest? How are birds trained and monitored so that they might make it 'into the wild'?

Through this collection of short stories, follow the paths of Mbutu, Pascu and Pimen as they navigate their way from captivity to free flight, and learn about the work of the humans who care for them. The stories are based on six months of ethnographic fieldwork in Northern Argentina, where I volunteered at the Foundation Rewilding Argentina.
