Admission

This study programme starts in August.

  • EU/EEA/Swiss applicants: from 1 February until 1 March  
  • Nordic citizens and applicants with a permanent or renewable residence permit in Norway: from 1 February until 15 April 
  • Non-EU/EEA applicants: from 1 October until 1 December ?

How to apply

Admission requirements

Admission to master's degree studies requires:

  • Higher Education Entrance Qualification and a completed bachelor's degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor's degree. Applicants with foreign education, please refer to the country list.
  • a specialization defined by the programme
  • a minimum grade average of C (in the Norwegian grading scale) or equivalent from the specialization in your degree.
  • a language requirement documented by one of the tests/exams below:
    a) Passed examination in English foundation course (140 hours/5 periods per week) with a minimum grade of 4 in Norwegian upper secondary school (or an equivalent grade from a Nordic upper secondary school) or passed examination in English from second and/or third school year in Norwegian upper secondary school, or
    b) An internationally recognised English language proficiency test.

Required specialization

A minimum of 80 ECTS informatics credits including 30 credits on beginner level (1000-courses) and 20 credits on advanced level (2000- and 3000-courses).

Note: This programme requires that you also have som background in mathematics.

Required specialization autumn 2017

Autumn 2017 the study program Informatics: technical and scientific applications will have two programme options with different requirements:

Admission to the programme option Imaging and biomedical computing, requires a Bachelor’s degree with the following courses, or the equivalent from an external institution:

Admission before completing a bachelor degree

If there's less qualified applicants than the number of available slots, you may be admitted to the master programme if you have completed at least 160 of the 180 ECTS credits and have also passed at least 70 of the 80 credits that's a part of your programme option.

Condiional admission assumes that missing exams will be attempted and passed at the earliest possible opportunity, and at the latest within a year.

Documentation

You have to upload all required documents in UiO's online application portal.

If you have completed studies/courses outside the University of Oslo, you must also upload course descriptions. The course names and codes on the course descriptions must match the transcript of records.

Export control

This programme is covered by the regulations on export control. Export controls are applied to countries where there is suspicion about development and use of weapons of mass destruction. UiO will therefore conduct a specific evaluation of these applicants.

Ranking of applicants

Applicants are ranked according to their grade average in the specialization of their degree. Applicants who cannot be ranked according to their grade average, will be ranked on the basis of an individual assessment.

You normally cannot be admitted to a master's degree programme or study option within the same subject area as a previously completed master's degree at the University of Oslo.

Recognition of prior education

If you have previous higher education, you may apply for specific recognition of this education as part of your degree. Education from both Norwegian and non-Norwegian higher education institutions may be recognised. Recognition depends upon whether the education meets the specific requirements of your degree. Tuition fees

Students with citizenship from a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland must pay tuition fees from the academic year 2023/2024, unless they qualify for an exemption. Read more about tuition fees.
