Programme structure 2017

The Master’s programme in theoretical physics must contain at least two of the following courses:
FYS4110 - Modern quantum mechanics
FYS4160 - The General Theory of relativity
FYS4170 - Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

The remaining courses may be chosen freely according to the guidelines concerning composition of theoretical curriculum.

The following courses are recommended.

For a Master’s programme in particle physics and/or cosmology:

FYS4160 - The General Theory of relativity
FYS4170 - Relativistic Quantum Field Theory
FYS4560 - Elementary Particle Physics

For specialisation in low energy quantum phenomena:

FYS4110 - Modern quantum mechanics
FYS4170 - Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

For a Master’s thesis where experimental quantum optics is included:

FYS4110 - Modern Quantum mechanics
FYS3120 - Classical mechanics and electrodynamics plus 10 ECTS credits in experimental quantum optics (group tuition every Autumn).

Other relevant courses:

FYS3120 - Classical mechanics and electrodynamics
FYS4130 - Statististical Mechanics
FYS3140 - Mathematical methods in physics

For general structure and requirements look at the program structure page.

It is possible to complete the programme part time. Please contact your supervisor and department if you wish to do so.

Recognition of Master courses from former education

If you are admitted to the Masters Programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Physics for more information.
