Learning outcomes

Through the master's programme in Stochastic modelling, statistics and risk analysis, you will gain in-depth knowledge of a wide range of methods and techniques for analysis and problem solving in insurance, finance, risk analysis or statistics. You will develop good theoretical insight and the ability to apply the theory to develop methods and techniques to solve problems.

After completing a master's degree in Stochastic modeling, statistics and risk analysis, you have achieved:

Proficiency

  • You have specialized and updated knowledge within one of the main areas of the programme in insurance, finance, risk analysis and statistics.
  • You have deep insight, understanding and intuition within a special field that varies depending on choice of programme option and master's project.
  • You have solid knowledge of a wide range of methods and techniques based on mathematics, probability, statistics and computer science and can use them for analysis and problem solving.
  • A broad background is required to choose appropriate methods for the work on the master's project and for the problems the candidates will encounter in their professional life. How broad background a candidate will have, varies somewhat depending on choice of courses and topic for the master's thesis.

Skills

  • You are able to grasp relevant practical problems, to formulate the problems mathematically, and to find solutions to the problems using suitable analytical and/or numerical methods.
  • In the work on the master's Project, you get practice in studying the relevant literature and to use it in an active and critical manner in relation to your own project.
  • Most master's projects involve numerical calculations that give training in the use of relevant programming tools and software.
  • You have a good understanding of the relationship between a specific problem and the mathematical model that describes the problem.
  • Many master's projects are based on a practical problem and give the students training in evaluating the suitability of a mathematical or statistical model.

General competence

  • You can express yourself accurately and scientifically in Norwegian and English, both written and verbally.
  • A number of master's courses include project work that provides training in written and oral presentation.
  • During the work on the master's thesis, ypu receive feedback on both the form and the content of the written work.
  • At the final master's hearing you present your theses and discuss them with the external and internal sensor.
  • You can collaborate, also across disciplines, with other specialists.
  • You have professional insight and overall understanding and can discuss and communicate professional issues at different levels of precision. This is crucial for their future professional life, where they will collaborate with other specialists (such as economists, lawyers, engineers and doctors).
