Mind Surfing Workshop

A RITMO-funded workshop bringing together scholars from philosophy, music studies, psychology, and literature studies to discuss the novel concept of 'Mind Surfing'.

The vignette illustrates a 2x2 model of different modes of experience encountered in performative musicking. H?ffding, Nielsen, Laeng (2024)

Musical absorption is a paradoxical phenomenon: according to both literature in the psychology of music and in cognitive psychology, musical absorption seemingly includes processes of both focused attention and mind wandering. But why would it be that we can both attend to something intensely while seemingly thinking of something else entirely? We propose that the concept of 'mind surfing' captures what musical absorption is all about, and explains why it can be so powerful.

This RITMO-funded workshop brings together scholars from philosopy, music studies, psychology, and literature studies to discuss the concept of ‘mind surfing’, recently coined by Simon H?ffding, Bruno Laeng, and Nanette Nielsen.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided. The event is free of charge. In-person attendance only.
