ARK4020 – Research Themes in Mediterranean Archaeology

Course content

The course explores various research themes within Mediterranean archaeology with an emphasis on method and theory and how these can be applied, not only within the field of archaeology but also in related disciplines.

Learning outcome

The course aims to expand the students’ knowledge of Mediterranean art, and culture and to develop a critical stance towards the application of theories and Methods.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The course is open to all students on the master level at The Faculty of Humanities, but students from the programmes Arkeologi og konservering (master – to ?r) (continued) and Kunsthistorie og visuelle studier (master – to ?r) will be prioritized.

The course i also open to foreign students with the right prerequisites.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Bachelor degree in archaeology with minimum 10 ects credits in classical archaeology. The course is based on the BA-Level course ARK2021-Klassisk arkeologi

Teaching

The teaching consists of 7 three-hour seminars. Presentation of the draft for the term paper, and commenting another student`s presentation will be part of the seminars. This is an obligatory qualification assignment in the course.

The course use Canvas and student-email.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Term paper : The term paper is assessed as pass or fail. A draft of the term paper is to be presented in the seminars. The assessment will only be based on the written work.

Submission: The term paper is to be submitted in Inspera, and the format must be PDF. Your candidate number (found in student web) should be on every page as top text.The font should be Times New Roman or similar, size 12, and 1,5 Space. There should be about 2300 characters without Spaces per page, and the page Count should be about 8-10 pages (about 18 400 - 23 000 characters without Spaces).

It is the student`s responsibility to hand in a readable document within the deadline. If there should be any technical problems during the submission, contact the department as soon as possible.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

The exam results will be available in studentweb within Three weeks after the exam date (not counting national holidays).
