HIS4031 – Project seminar, master thesis

Course content

The student is expected to choose a topic for the master’s thesis early in the semester and to start orientate herself/himself in the relevant literature. The student will write a research project description for the thesis where this literature (including relevant theory) is accounted for and commented upon. It should include a clear problem formulation.

Learning outcome

By taking this course you will learn:

  • How to develop and formulate an individual research project
  • What a project description should contain and how to formulate it
  • To relate existing research litterature to your own planned research project
  • To give comments on other students' work

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

To be admitted to the course the student must be enrolled as an MA student.

Teaching

Early in the semester the teacher will give an introduction to the course, lecturing on how to write a project description. After that, the students will spend several weeks writing the description. In the second half of the semester, the students’ description will be discussed, the number of seminars depending on how many students there are. Towards the end of the semester, all revised project descriptions will be discussed in a full-day seminar. The supervisors are responsible for staying in contact with the students during the process.

Compulsory participation

All students hand in their own project description as well as comment upon a fellow student’s description. Students are expected to attend all seminars.

All students hand in a revised project description prior to the full-day seminar. Attending the full-day seminar is compulsory.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

The project description must be uploaded in Inspera as a .pdf-file. Information about the deadline is available on the semester page.

Students enrolled in the History Masters programme must hand in a signed contract for supervision. This must be done before the project descriptions are uploaded in Inspera.

Signed contracts can be handed in to the administration, 4.floor at Niels Treschows Hus.

Grading: pass/fail. The project descriptions are graded by the seminar leader.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
