KONS4070 – University of Oslo Summer School in Conservation of Theatre Sceneries

Course content

The course provides theoretical and practical experience in the documentation, investigation and treatment of theatre sceneries as well as how to communicate conservation to the broader public.

You will be introduced to data management, common and more advanced investigation techniques, methods of structural intervention and cleaning, and communication techniques.

Learning outcome

In this course, you will develop knowledge and understanding of project management and conservation of large matt-painted canvases on stretchers as well as how to communicate conservation to a broader public.

When you have completed this course you will:

  • have gained an understanding of the technology and materials used in matt-paint/glue-bound paint and their support
  • be able to manage large amounts of data using data management systems
  • be able to apply a hierarchy of diagnostic methods to explain and document the types, causes and extent of various structural damages
  • be able to propose, discuss and carry out conservation actions on matt-painted objects
  • be able to evaluate progress and adapt your approach when required
  • have the ability to communicate knowledge about the original materials and conservation actions by oral, written and digital means
  • have the ability to collaborate in diverse cultural groups

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The course can take 2 master students, one from Paining Conservation and one from Object Conservation. Students who have taken the course earlier cannot apply.

Candidates are selected after the following criteria:

1. Number of study points in 80-group (KUBE)
2. Grades obtained from the 80-group at Bachelor (KUBE)
3. Grades obtained from other Bachelor courses

Admission for this course is in June.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Requires 60-ECTS in conservation subjects, and candidates must be enrolled to the Arkeologi og konservering (master – to ?r) (continued) or one of the collaborating Universities.

A good ability to read and understand English is required for this course.

Teaching

The Summer School in Conservation of Theatre Sceneries is an intensive course consisting of both individual learning through on-line lectures and collaborative learning on-site.

Students are expected to have read the literature and worked through the on-line lectures before the practical part of the course commences. During the two week practical course students will work in diverse cultural groups and carry out under guidance the investigation, documentation and conservation of a selection of theatre sceneries.

In addition to the practical work, the course includes lectures, demonstrations and seminars. Seminars are informal and lively discussion is encouraged. Furthermore students are required to communicate the project to a larger public by means of social media and oral presentation.

The two week on-site practical teaching takes place in either June or August in Halden. For Norwegian students: You may apply for admission to the course in the studentweb from June 3 till June 12.

The course uses Canvas as its learning environment for sharing teaching resources, communication between student and course leaders, a forum for student participation and hand-in of the examination report.

Attendance at lectures and seminars is compulsory.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

A group exercise consisting of writing up the work accomplished during the 2 week practical in the format of a conservation report. The exam is to be handed in 6 weeks after the practical teaching has taken place.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
