MITRA4095 – Master's thesis in Modern International and Transnational History

Course content

The master’s thesis is an individual research paper from the thematic field of international and transnational history. The purpose of the thesis is to pursue an independent research project. Students apply for a supervisor from the Department in the first semester and discuss possible topics as part of this application process. It should depart from a clear research question, pursue a coherent argument and rest on profound empirical and multi-archival research as well as the use of advanced historiographical methodology.

Learning outcome

After you have taken this course you are expected to have:

  • Proven your abilities and skills and developed a research question, worked out a research design and chosen adequate methods, and answered the questions systematically and within the given time frame.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to process and critically assess large amounts of primary source material and worked with international historical archives.
  • Carried out an independent piece of research from within the area of international and transnational history and been able to position it with regard to current historiography and relevant theoretical approaches within the broader field of inquiry.
  • Presented the results of the research according to academic norms of history writing and demonstrate the ability to use adequate and accessible language.

This course is only for students who are admitted to the Master Programme Modern International and Transnational History (master's two years).

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Admission to the masters programme Modern International and Transnational History (master's two years) and passing grades in the compulsory courses at least the semester prior:

Teaching

Mainly individual supervision (or supervision in groups). Collective academic supervision will be given in Research Writing and Training in History I,II and III. These courses must be completed as a pre-requisite to start work on the thesis along with the other mandatory courses.

All students will apply for an academic supervisor in their second semester semester. The application deadline is February 1. For more information follow the link about applying for a supervisor.

Compulsory Assingment:

To be able to hand in your master`s thesis you will have to fill out the information form.

Deadlines:

Spring semester: March 1

Autumn semester: October 1

The information form must contain a synopsis of the master`s thesis. Addidionally you will need to inform your supervisor that you intend to hand in the master`s thesis in the current semester.

Examination

The final Master`s degree exam consists of an individual Master`s thesis (40-50 pages, front page, index, appendix and bibliography not included) A commission consisting of one internal and one external examiner assesses the thesis.

NB! In the semester you are handing in the thesis, make sure you read all the relevant information about formal requirements and how to hand in your thesis by following the link to Master Thesis in Modern International and Transnational History. Make sure your do this early in the semester.

From the fall of 2019 the thesis needs to be submitted in Inspera in addition to DUO, and from the spring of 2021 the hand in is only digital.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
