Course content
This course is designed to provide an introduction to Ibsen’s dramatic production, emphasizing its historical context. The plays will be analysed as part of and influenced by social, political and cultural forces, and as part of changing aesthetic and artistic norms.
Selected works will be examined against the background of changing literary paradigms in Ibsen’s own time. Special attention will be paid to Ibsen’s renewal of the dramatic tradition. The plays investigated will be seen both as texts and as performed in theatres, then and now.
Learning outcome
Upon completing the course the students should be able to
- Discuss the developments within Ibsen’s dramatic production
- Analyse Ibsen’s dramatic production in relation to its historical context
- Analyse Ibsen’s plays as both text and performance, in keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of Ibsen Studies

Teaching
The course is given jointly with IBS4101 and the course has duration of one semester, combining lectures and seminar discussion for a total of 28 hours. One obligatory assignment is to be written at home during the course chosen from a list of relevant topics or formulated by the individual student. The topic for the assignment is subject to the approval of the course instructor.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid the next two times the course is given.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Three-day written home examination on an assigned topic of maximum10 pages (2300 characters without spaces per page)

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
A term paper or equivalent that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.
If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
