IBS3204 – Ibsen in Performance

Course content

Ibsen’s dramas have been staged on most theatres all over the world.

The aim of this course is to show how Ibsen’s dramas have been staged, how the theatre productions and Ibsen’s dramas have been influenced by the general changes and tendencies in theatre styles and policies and how the staging of Ibsen’s dramas have been an obstacle to or a renewal in the theatre.

Film adaptations will also be considered.

A standard syllabus has been produced, and this will be found on the course page for each semester.

Learning outcome

To provide insight in the performance history of Ibsen’s dramas with a focus on different performance traditions and trans-cultural and global perspectives.

Teaching

The course is given jointly with IBS4204 – Ibsen in Performance and the course has duration of one semester, combining intensive seminar teaching and regular weekly courses with exercises in groups to a total of 28 hours. One obligatory assignment is to be written at home during the course chosen from an inventory of seminar relevant topics or formulated by the individual student. (The title of the assignment is subject to the approval of the course teacher)

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

Each student writes an assignment 10 pages in length (approx. 20,000 characters). The assignment is assessed and graded by the subject teacher.
