FIL4012 – Critical Reading of Ancient Philosophical Texts

Course content
The course consists in a close reading and discussion of a major philosophical work from Antiquity (the period from the 5th century BC to the 7th century AD). The webpage for the semester will show to which area the work in question belongs.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have
- developed your skills in analyzing arguments in complicated ancient philosophical texts
- learnt how to use secondary literature and sources critically
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Teaching
24 hours of seminar. The course has the following compulsory tuition activities:
- Mandatory presence at the seminars. You must be present minimum 9 out of 12 times, amongst these the last two times. Active participation is expected throughout the whole seminar.
- Written assignments (more information will be given)
All compulsory activities must be accepted as satisfactory in order to complete the final exam.

Examination
A term paper of 12-15 pages à 2.300 characters, excl. bibliography. The topic must be approved of by the teacher. You submit your essay in Inspera.
When you write an essay you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. However, this requires that you submit a draft.
All compulsory tuition activities must be accepted as satisfactory in order to be able to submit the exam.
