GRE4312 – Greek Prose of the Imperial Period
Course content
In this course, we will read excerpts from Greek prose from the Roman imperial period (especially from the first three centuries AD), approximately 100 pages* in total. This may include, for example, texts by Arrian, Dion of Prusa, Plutarch, Lucian and Pausanias. The texts will be read in relation to the historical and cultural context of literary activity in that period. In addition, we read secondary literature that sheds light on modern interpretations of authorship in that period.
* 1 page = 1 page in Teubner / Oxford Classical Texts.
Learning outcome
Having completed this course, you will be able to:
- read, understand and translate the texts from the syllabus
- explain and discuss the content and structure of the works read
- discuss specific passages with regard to textual criticism, language, style, as well as literary, historical and/or cultural aspects
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
You must have at least 80 ECTS in Greek to be admitted to this course.
Teaching
Autumn 2021 the teaching is common with GRE2400 – Reading Greek Texts (discontinued).
10 double hours of seminar instruction.
To be able to take the exam, you must have completed successfully the following compulsory activity:
- You must submit a draft of the term paper and receive guidance on this.
Approval of teaching activity is valid only for the current semester.
Examination
Term paper (10 pages, 2 300 characters each, not included title page and references).
When you write a term paper you are entitled to supervision by the teacher. This requires, however, that you hand in a draft of your paper before a given deadline.
In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
