GRE4316 – Archaic Greek Poetry
Course description
Course content
On this course we study a selection of Greek lyric poetry from the Archaic period. (7.-5. century BCE), e.g. poems by Archilochus, Alcman, Sappho, Alcaeus, Anacreon, Pindar, Bacchylides (in total 1800-2000 verses). In addition you will be expected to read supplementary literature for orientation and/or in-depth-study.
The readings illustrate the poems` language and style, metre, tradition history, content, performance context and their relation to other types of poetry (epic poetry, drama)
Learning outcome
When you have completed this course, you are able to:
- translate the course texts.
- account for the metre in the course texts.
- account for the textual tradition of the course texts and its importance for the poems` present form.
- explain the poems` relation to other poetic genres in antiquity (epic poetry, drama).
- orient yourself in key scholary contributions that focus on archaic Greek poetry.
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
You must be admitted to Classical Studies (master`s two years) to sign up for this course. Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
Minimum 60 ECTS credits in Ancient Greek.

Teaching
10 double sessions of seminars common with GRE2316 – Greek Choral Lyric (discontinued).
In order for you to be allowed to sit for the final examination, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:
- Draft of the semester paper. You submit your paper in Canvas.
Examination
Seminar paper (10 pages, 2300 characters pr. page. Spaces, title page and bibliography not included). You choose the subject of your semester essay in agreement with the teacher.
When you write a semester paper, you are entitled to receive individual supervision. The compulsory draft forms the basis of this supervision. The draft must meet certain requirements in order to be approved. Further information regarding supervision and submission of the draft will be given in the seminars.
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, the compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
