GRE4400 ¨C Reading Greek Texts and Project Development in Greek

Course content

This course aims to help you develop a topic for your master's thesis and to train you in independently engaging with a relevant set of original sources. Throughout the course, you will read a selection of Greek texts pertinent to your master's thesis, as well as relevant secondary literature. The reading list is established in consultation with the subject teacher and the Classics section. Based on the project outline you create during this course, you will be assigned a supervisor for your master's thesis.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of this course, you will have the ability to:

• independently read and interpret Greek texts.
• identify and formulate a specific research question for a master's thesis in Greek.
• reflect in writing both on the content and methodology of a scholarly presentation.
• present a scholarly argument in a concise oral presentation.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Specialization (80 ECTS credits) in Ancient Greek at bachelor's level.

Teaching

Three two-hour seminars, one in the beginning of the semester, one in the middle and one towards the end. Some seminars may be common for students in GRE4400 and LAT4400 ¨C Reading Latin Texts and Project Development in Latin, depending on the students' chosen topics. In addition, there will be six hours of guided reading of the Greek texts.

In order for you to submit the final portfolio,?the following compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher:

• Oral presentation pertinent to the reading list

• Attendance: You must attend all three two-hour seminars??

• Attendance in the?Classics seminar, at least once

?

Approved tuition activities are valid also for the next two semesters in which the course is offered.

Examination

Portfolio of a total of 10-15 pages, 2300 characters each (without spaces; title page and reference list not included), which contains:

• Written task pertinent to the reading list
• Written reflection on at least one of the talks at the Classics seminar.?
• Project description of the master's thesis

All compulsory activities must be approved before you can submit your portfolio.?

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.?Read more about the grading system.
