GRE4408 – Greek Drama
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
We read a Greek drama from the classical period (fifth cent. BCE) - tragedy or comedy - and parts of other dramatic works related to it thematically or otherwise (100 pages* in total).
The course also offers insight into the scholarly interpretation of the text(s) read and their scholarly and artistic reception through extensive reading of secondary literature.
* 1 page = 1 page in Teubner / Oxford Classical texts.
Learning outcome
After having completed the course, you will be able to:
- translate the text(s) read from ancient Greek into Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
- situate the text as a whole and/or parts of it within their historical context
- explain the grammar of the texts, their content, and meter.
- analyse textual, lingustic, stylistic, literary, historical and/or cultural aspects of the text read in dialogue with their scholarly interpretation.
Admission to the course

Formal prerequisite knowledge
Bachelor`s degree containing at least 80 ECTS in Ancient Greek, or corresponding education.
Recommended previous knowledge
GRE1001 – Innf?ring i gresk I, GRE1002 – Innf?ring i gresk II, GRE1105 – Gresk grammatikk I and GRE2105 – Gresk grammatikk II.
Teaching
- 14 double sessions of seminars together with GRE2405 – Greek Drama
- Additional 4 double sessions of tutorials on secondary literature
Active participation of students enrolled in seminars is expected.
In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the following compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher:
- draft of the semester essay (minimum 2-3 pages, à 2300 characters). You submit your essay in Fronter.
Approval of teaching activity is valid only for the current semester.
Examination
Essay in English or Norwegian (10 pages, including footnotes and reference list). Formal parameters: 12 pt font, Times New Roman, 1,5 interlinear space.
Topic: own choice (and approved by the teacher) or given by the teacher.
In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
