Course content
We read excerpts from Cicero`s speeches, letters or philosophical works (60-75 pages*). In addition you will be expected to read supplementary literature for in-dept-study and/or orientation.
* 1 page = 1 page in Teubner / Oxford Classical Texts.
Learning outcome
When you have completed this course, you will:
- be able to translate the course texts from Greek to Norwegian or English.
- have full command of the central vocabulary in the texts.
- be able to discuss rhetorical and stylistic aspects of the texts.
- be able to interpret the texts with an eye to historical, cultural or other aspects.

- LAT1001 – Innf?ring i latin I eller LAT4001 – Innf?ring i latin I for masterstudenter
- LAT1002 – Innf?ring i latin II eller LAT4002 – Innf?ring i latin II for masterstudenter
(or equivalent knowledge)
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge of grammar equivalent to LAT1105 – Latinsk grammatikk I. We strongly recommend that you have completed 40 ECTS of Latin at the basic level (i.e. courses with course codes LAT1xxx) before signing up for this course.
Overlapping courses
- 5 credits overlap with LAT2413 – Latin Oratory.
Teaching
In spring 2024 the teaching is common with LAT4318 – Latin Prose II.
14 double sessions of seminars. We expect you to meet prepared for the seminars and participate actively.
In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:
- Draft of the seminar paper (minimum 3-4 pages à 2300 characters). You submit your draft in Canvas.?
Approval of the draft is only valid for one semester.
Examination
Seminar paper (on a given topic) of approximately 10 pages of 2300 characters each, including spaces, title page and reference list not included.?
You submit your assignment in the digital examination system Inspera. You must familiarize yourself with Inspera before the submission deadline.?Read about how to submit your assignment in Inspera.
In order for you to be allowed to submit the seminar paper, the compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.?If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
