LAT4303 – Late Antique and Medieval Latin Prose and Poetry

Course content

We read 60-75 pages* of prose and poetry from ca. 400-1400 AD. Different genres are represented, for example Christian hymns, epic poetry, historiography, biography and letters. In addition, you will be expected to read supplementary literature for in-dept-study and/or orientation.

* 1 page = 1 page in Teubner / Oxford Classical Texts.

Learning outcome

After this course, you will be able to:

  • translate the course texts from Latin to Norwegian or English
  • have full command of the central vocabulary in the texts
  • discuss linguistic and stylistic aspects of the texts
  • present the development from classical metric poetry to rhythmic poetry
  • present Christianity's contribution to the development of language, style and content in Latin texts from the period 400-1400 AD
  • discuss the use of classical genres (e.g. epic poetry, historiography, biography, letters) during the late-antique and medieval period 
  • discuss how new genres (e.g. hymns, sermons) emerged/developed during the period

Admission

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Minimum 60 points ECTS in Latin

Teaching

14 double sessions of seminars common with LAT2404 – Late Antique and Medieval Latin Texts (discontinued). The seminars require active participation by the students and we expect you to meet prepared. 

In order for you to qualify for the final examination, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:

  • draft of the term paper. The draft should be submitted in Canvas, around halfway through the semester

If your draft is not approved, you will be allowed to revise and resubmit the draft. Guidance will be offered on basis of your draft. 

Approved compulsory tuition activity is only valid the semester it finds place, as the activity is directly connected to the exam. 

Examination

Term paper, 8-10 pages of 2300 signs, not including the list of literature. The subject will be given by the teacher.

When writing a term paper, you are entitled to individual guidance by the teacher. The obligatory paper draft constitutes the basis for the guidance. The draft must satisfy certain minimum requirements to be approved. More information on guidance and the handing in of the draft will be given during the course. 

In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
