AMS4900 – International Project Term in Asia and the Middle East

Course content
On AMS4900 you will spend the third semester of your MA degree doing an internship that will give you an opportunity to gain relevant work experience, use your academic skills in a practical manner, and present yourself in an international work environment. The internship must be carried out at an embassy/consulate or in an organisation/company in the Middle East, East Asia or South Asia, depending on your field of study.
The semester will be split between your own work with a report and the work you will carry out for the embassy or organisation. 12-18 hours a week will be set aside for you to work on the report. UiO, the individual student, and the embassy/organisation must decide in mutual consultation what the topic of the report should be.
Students that meet the requirements for AMS4900 can:
- apply for internship through UiO`s agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD). All contact with UD will be managed by UiO. NB! Only for students with a Norwegian citizenship.
- find their own relevant internship that meets UiOs requirements. All internship partners must agree and sign The Faculty of Humanities` internship agreement.

Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Only students admitted to Asia and Middle East Studies can apply. The International Project Term must be completed in the third semester.
You can only be admitted to the course if a relevant institution is found and agrees upon cooperation. It is the institution itself that will have the final word regarding whether your internship proposal is accepted or not accepted. The admission to the UD agreement is limited by the number of internship spots available.
To apply for UiO`s agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) you must(for student with an Norwegian citizenship):
- Fill out the application form before the deadline 1st of March/1st of October.?
- Write a personal application in English, 1 page maximum.
- Attach your CV.
- Attach your transcript of records.
- Attach a letter of recommendation from one of your teachers.
NB! All documents must be saved in one pdf.-file.
If you plan to arrange an internship agreement on your own you must:
- Talk to your supervisor and course instructor about internship in relevant organizations or companies before you fill out the application form with the deadline 1st of March/1st of October.
- Get your potential internship agreement approved by the Department before you contact them.
- Get your potential internship partner to sign the Faculty of Humanities internship agreement by the deadline 1st of May/1st of November.
All papers should be in English. The Department will be able to assist you with information about AMS4900 to a potential internship partner, as well as the Faculty of Humanities internship agreement.
All students are responsible to arrange visa/work permit for themselves.
Before you leave Norway, you must submit the online form regarding studies abroad.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
You must have passed exams equivalent to 60 credits in the first two terms of your Master’s degree in Asia and Middle East Studies.
Overlapping courses
- 30 credits overlap with AAS4900 – International Project Term in Asia and Africa (continued).
Teaching
You will receive supervision by phone, on Zoom or on e-mail.
Obligatory activities
- You must submit an outline and drafts to the supervisor for guidance and comments.
- A compulsory full day seminar will be arranged in June (time and place will be announced by email after the internships have been confirmed).

Examination
The exam is a report written during the internship period. The length of the report should be approximately 20 pages (2300 characters without spacing).
UiO, the individual student, and the external contractor must decide in mutual consultation what the topic of the report should be. UiO has the academic responsibility for assuring the quality of the topic proposal and for the content of the report, plus the continuous academic follow-up.
12-18 hours per week are to be set aside for writing of the report.
Language of examination
The reports are written in Norwegian or English, depending on where you are stationed.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
